This course explores the critical period in German history from the end of World War I to the eve of World War II, examining the political, economic, social, and cultural transformations that shaped modern Germany.

Beginning with the aftermath of Germany’s defeat in World War I and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, we will analyse the establishment and challenges of the Weimar Republic. The course will cover the Weimar Republic’s political instability, economic crises, and the cultural renaissance of the 1920s. We will study key events such as hyperinflation, the Ruhr Crisis, and the Great Depression, which exacerbated societal tensions and disillusionment with democratic governance.
